One of the most common issues with HP laptops is screen damage. Unlike desktops, we all carry our HP laptops from place to place, so it’s no wonder screen damage occurs so often. This article will explain how to perform an HP laptop screen repair, from initial troubleshooting to installing a replacement.

Before attempting to replace your HP laptop screen, we first need to make sure that your screen really needs repair. You may have dropped your HP laptop and after seeing that it doesn’t display an image, you just assumed the screen was broken. The screen may be a bit cracked, and yet that may not be the reason you can’t get a picture. If your HP laptop has a VGA output, we connect it to a desktop monitor or television to see if it displays the image correctly. If it still doesn’t show up, it means your graphics card or motherboard is probably bad. If this is the case, we suggest that you replace these components. Only when we can see an image on an external monitor but not on your HP laptop screen, we replace the screen.

Another problem that we may discover is that we may see a dull image on the screen of your HP laptop, or that the backlight may flicker and turn off. If this is the case, it is probably due to a faulty inverter. If so, we’ll contact you to suggest replacing the inverter and see if that fixes the problem. If we don’t see any image on your HP laptop screen, but the HP laptop looks fine on an external monitor, we know it’s time to replace the HP laptop screen.

Removing the screws from the HP laptop screen
Once we’ve decided that the HP laptop screen needs to be replaced and you’ve given us the go-ahead to start working on it, the first thing we do is remove the power brick and battery. Next, we look for rubber tabs on the frame around the screen.
After finding them, we use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry open these covers one by one. These reveal several screws holding the «bezel» or frame to the display. In most cases, we can unscrew these bezel screws with a small Phillips head screwdriver. However, there are some HP laptop frames that are held together with allen screws, in which case we use an allen driver instead. We’ve got tools to remove all sorts of screws, so we’re ready for whatever weird puzzle the designer of the HP laptop throws at us. In some cases, there may not be any screws holding the frame in place. In this case, we can open the frame by inserting a small, flat tool into a slot that runs along the top and sides of the frame.

Remove the frame
Once we have removed the screws, we disassemble the bezel and the LCD screen. On most HP laptops, the frame is secured to the screen with plastic snaps, so we know it’s finally come off when we hear the snaps «pop» as they release. Once the bezel is removed, we see the LCD screen inside another metal frame. This metal frame rests against or is attached to the back cover of the HP laptop. We remove the metal frame from the box by unscrewing more screws or simply pulling them apart. Once we can remove the LCD screen and the metal frame from the back cover, we unscrew the rest of the screws that hold the metal frame to the screen. Then the LCD comes loose, but it’s still connected to the video cable.

We can usually order a replacement LCD screen using just your HP laptop model number. In some cases, we may need to know the part number of the LCD screen. If so, we look at the back of the LCD screen once we remove it from the HP laptop. The part number is a string of letters and numbers. This is the information we need to find the correct replacement screen. Some prefer to always replace their screen with the official LCD offered by the manufacturer. Others prefer to save money by using a replacement LCD screen provided by an independent manufacturer. Ultimately, it’s up to you which one you want us to install.
